Garage door motors, openers and remotes in Toowoomba
Repairing or replacing openers, programming remotes and keypads, and converting manual doors to automatic.
Motor not working? Common causes
- No power. A tripped circuit, a switched-off power point or a power outage. After the November 2025 hailstorm, Ergon crews were still restoring power across the region (Toowoomba Regional Council).
- Remote problems. B&D lists "misaligned sensors, interference in the signal, or depleted batteries in the remote" as reasons a door may not respond (B&D).
- Safety beams blocked or out of line. Many openers will not close the door if the beams near the floor are blocked, dirty or knocked out of alignment.
- Motor released. If someone pulled the manual release, the motor runs but the door does not move until it is re-engaged.
- A door problem, not a motor problem. A broken spring or a binding track makes the door too heavy for the motor. See springs and cables.
- Worn motor parts such as gears, belts or circuit boards, especially on older openers.
The garage door won't open checklist covers the checks you can safely do yourself.
Converting a manual door to automatic
Many manual roller, sectional and tilt doors can be fitted with an opener, but the door needs to be in good condition and lift freely by hand first. What's The Damage? notes that its opener estimates assume the door lifts freely (What's The Damage?). Things to discuss with the technician:
- The right opener for the door. Roller door openers and sectional door openers are different products.
- Power. If there is no power point near the opener, installing one is electrical work and must be done by a licensed electrician in Queensland (Electrical Safety Office).
- Battery back-up, if you want the door to work during outages.
- Controls. Extra remotes, a wall button, a keypad or phone control.
- Safety beams, particularly if children or pets use the garage.
If your remote or keypad uses a coin-sized button battery, treat it with care. Mandatory national safety and information standards for button batteries were introduced in June 2022 (ACCC). Products that use them must have secure battery compartments, and the ACCC says one child a month in Australia is seriously injured after swallowing or inserting a button battery (ACCC).
- Keep spare and used batteries out of reach of children.
- Check that the battery cover on every remote closes securely, and replace a remote with a broken cover.
- Wrap both sides of a used battery in sticky tape, then put it in an outside bin or recycle it (SA Consumer and Business Services).
- If you think a child has swallowed a battery, call the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26 immediately, or 000 if they have trouble breathing (same source).
Published prices
Published estimates put a motor or opener, supplied and fitted, at around $400 to $1,000, a quieter belt-drive upgrade at $550 to $1,200, and a replacement remote or keypad at $80 to $220 (What's The Damage?, Brisbane, October 2026). B&D's guide lists roller door openers at about $750 to $1,500 and sectional door openers at about $850 to $1,300 (B&D price guide). Ask whether a quote includes installation, remotes and removal of the old unit. See the full garage door price guide.
Before you book
- Note the motor brand and model from the label on the unit, if you can read it safely.
- Say whether the door moves by hand with the motor released.
- Say how many remotes you need and whether you want a keypad or phone control.
When you are ready, request a motor or opener quote and an independent Toowoomba technician will contact you.
