What is a wind-rated garage door, and do I need one?
A wind-rated garage door has been tested to AS/NZS 4505. The Queensland Government says many doors made before the current standards were not reinforced and could not withstand the wind pressures of a severe weather event. Ask any installer for the door wind rating, the test paperwork, and how they will check the frame.
What "wind-rated" means
A wind-rated garage door is one that has been tested to resist set wind loads under the Australian and New Zealand standard AS/NZS 4505, Wind rated garage doors. The Queensland Government's Household Resilience Program explains that the AS/NZS 4505 test "simulates the effects of significant wind loads during a severe weather event".
Why older doors are a concern
The same Queensland Government factsheet says that "before the current standards, many garage doors were not reinforced and could not withstand the wind pressures of a severe weather event". It also says research has shown that protecting the outer skin of a home from wind pressure "will significantly improve the chances of retaining a roof".
The Household Resilience Program covers coastal Central and North Queensland, not Toowoomba, but its explanation of wind-rated doors applies anywhere. Toowoomba gets severe storms too. After the hailstorm in early November 2025, Toowoomba Regional Council reported Ergon crews working to restore power across the region.
What a compliant installation involves
The factsheet's requirements for a funded door give a useful checklist for any replacement:
- The door must comply with AS/NZS 4505, with evidence of compliance.
- It must be installed to the manufacturer's requirements for AS/NZS 4505. That includes checking that the building structure can carry the loads from the new door down to the ground.
- The quote should show the contractor's QBCC licence number, and say that certification will be provided when the work is finished.
That is why the factsheet asks for the structure to be checked. Ask the installer how they will check the jambs and header the door is fixed to.
Questions to ask before you buy
- What wind rating does this door have, and what does my house need?
- Can I see the AS/NZS 4505 test paperwork?
- Will you check the frame the door is fixed to, and what happens if it needs work?
- What certificate will I get when the job is done?
If you are keeping your current door
Check that it opens and closes smoothly, the springs are balanced, and the wind locks or braces, if fitted, are in place. See new doors and installation for door types and published price estimates.
